Farm to School Program

Since 2001, the Community Alliance with Family Farmers has spearheaded Farm to School projects across California. Our Farm to School initiative has developed and coordinated on-the-ground programs connecting schools and schoolchildren to their local farming communities while also creating resources, workshops and materials that help further the Farm to School movement in California.

Here in Santa Cruz we reconnect children to agriculture and wholesome food through our Know Your Farmer and Harvest of the Month programs. We bring farmers into classrooms so students can meet and learn from local farmers, and provide engaging in-class lessons on nutrition and foodsystems. Our Harvest of the Month Tasting Kits supply 180 classrooms in Santa Cruz county with great lessons and fresh locally grown produce from small farms. These Tasting Kits help teach kids first hand about agriculture and nutrition by giving them the opportunity to them to taste different kinds of fruits and vegetables from local growers. We also bring classrooms out on farm field trips where students have a blast learning about their foodsystem through science, language arts, and nutrition lessons.

This Thanksgiving Nourish hosted a fundraiser for our local Farm to School program and raised over $500 dollars! Being a non-for-profit organization, we rely on the support of community members and grants. Your generous support this holiday season helped us reach even more students with these dynamic programs that teach kids about food and farming, inspiring them to make healthier eating choices that support their local farming community. Thank you for your support!

With gratitude,

Kathryn Spencer

Birthday Gratitude

On Saturday, November 20th, we raised $365 for Bounce For Life! Thank you to all of you who donated and for the well wishes from everyone. You all helped make my birthday week so much fun, truly an EXTRAORDINARY celebration.

Below you will find the “Victorisms”, the quotes from last week’s board that were attributed to me. You’ll also find the various playlists from throughout the week. Enjoy!

Victorisms
Enjoy!
Feel free.
Thank you for being here.
OR NOT is always an option.
Take your time.
Nicely done. (variations were: Nice work in that series. Good job in…. Etc.)
As you are ready.
Breathe.
How’s that?
Eventually.
Relax your glutes. Yoga should make you less of a tight ass.
Find yourself as you are.
Shall we flow?
Looks like you’ve had enough of that. (variation: That’s enough of that.)
Indeed.
Is that all you got?
I got nothin’.
Make the ordinary extraordinary. (variation: The ordinary is extraordinary.)
I have a couple of announcements.
Please park only in the customer spaces.

Victor’s Birthday and Tribute to Andy Martin

On November 19, 2004 I celebrated my 32nd birthday. That same day, one of my closest friends, Andy Martin, died as a result of Sino-Nasal-Undifferentiated-Carcinoma (a rare form of nasal cancer). Each subsequent year I have shared my birthday with Andy’s memory and the legacy of his life and work.

Mostly I have remembered and retold the story of Andy’s unique battle with SNUC and helped raise money for Bounce For Life, the non-profit organization dedicated to the continuation of the work Andy began researching his own cancer while a medical student at Tulane University.

While Andy’s story certainly has personal relevance to me, the reason I feel so compelled to share it each year is because of the broader lessons Andy’s audacity, courage, hope, and commitment can teach us all. Here is Andy’s story:

In the summer of 2000, Andy was preparing to attend medical school at Tulane University when he developed intense nose bleeds. He was soon diagnosed with Sino-Nasal-Undifferentiated-Carcinoma. SNUC is one of the truly rare cancers with fewer than 100 cases reported in the scientific literature. It is also one of the most malignant cancers, with a 100% mortality rate within 5 years. Despite the diagnosis, and perhaps in someway inspired by it, for the next 4 years, Andy underwent the rigors of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery several times, while continuing in the medical school program at Tulane.

On the one hand, Andy was unnervingly confident that he could both beat this cancer and become an excellent physician. At the same time I believe that his rational mind understood the odds of his long term survival and that he calculated that spending his time in this pursuit, however potentially futile, was the best use of his remaining life. The inevitability of his passing sharpened his resolve.

While, to be sure, Andy’s battle was a personal one, he was not alone. When Andy lost his hair from chemotherapy and radiation treatment, his entire Tulane Medical School class shaved their heads in solidarity. On the occasion when Andy was almost guaranteed to lose his sense of taste because of an upcoming treatment, a wine-tasting party was held in his honor and Andy tasted his last drops of wine in the company of friends and colleagues. While the people around him came to give him support, I have no doubt that in many ways Andy’s courage and grace served as an inspiration for all of us who were lucky enough to be around him in those years.

Dr. Tyler Curiel was one of Andy’s professor’s at Tulane and became Andy’s mentor, colleague, and friend. Dr. Curiel was the Chief of Hematology and Oncology at Tulane where he ran a lab that specialized in immune responses to cancers. When Andy decided that he would rather, as he put it, “sidestep the clinical duties of a typical third year student and learn how to do the type of research that will further our understanding of SNUC,” he worked under the mentorship of Dr. Curiel.

Andy convinced Dr. Curiel to biopsy the cancer from Andy’s own body and Andy spent the rest of his life working with those samples. “If this cancer’s going to get me, damn it, I’m going to go down fighting, you know, and make a difference, so that future people who are diagnosed don’t have the same outcome that I had.” Andy’s work generated the only known living cell line of SNUC in the world. While research on this cell line certainly may one day inform the treatment of SNUC, its implications are much broader. Because SNUC is such a deadly and ferocious form of cancer, clinical treatments that either prove to slow or alter its development may be gateways in to treating more common forms of cancer. The value of a living cell line for this type of research can not be understated. If nothing else, and even if no treatment ever results from this research, Andy’s persistence, passion, and personal sacrifice will continue to serve those who watched him work and those who hear his story.

Bounce For Life, created while Andy was still alive, was originally a way for Dr. Curiel to help raise funds for the research by breaking a world record: he dribbled a basketball for 24 hours straight while running 108 miles. The organization continues now to help fund the research that Andy began and keep his cell lines, story, work, and legacy alive.

Feel free to come to class, or just stop by for cake, between classes at 11:30 a.m., or after the second class at 1:15 p.m. We will also collect cash and check donations for Bounce For Life.

Sara’s Birthday Mix

By: Victor Dubin

About 5 years ago the Tuesday night intermediate class and I went out to dinner at Olitas. At the time I was using only “yoga” music in my classes, flutes, sytar, chanting, etc. At the dinner the topic of my personal yoga practice came up and Sara asked what kind of music I listened to while practicing. I mentioned Led Zepplin, Mos Def, among others. She suggested I start using that kind of music in class and I began experimenting with different music mixes. Since then many of you have come to enjoy the Martin Luther King Birthday mixes, and the mixes for holidays, and even just encouraging the sun to shine. Thanks to Sara for the encouragement. Tapas – Hungry For Yoga

Jocelyn in TapasThis week we’re discussing the yoga principle tapas and people keep getting hungry during class. The definition we’ve been working with in class is commitment, dedication, and passion. And while all of these capture the essence of tapas, making a commitment to one’s self and one’s yoga practice, there is something to the experience of hunger that illuminates the practice of tapas.

When there is a hunger to practice yoga, there is tapas. Too often we silence the inner hunger to do what is best in exchange for what is easy or expedient. Tapas is an honoring of our best selves. It is a practice of listening to our need for effort in the direction of progress and growth. So when you are at the moment of internal decision: “I could go to yoga class, or I could go run these errands, or check my facebook page, or….” call on tapas to support your best self.

When there is a hunger to practice peace, there is tapas. The definition of peace as a noun misses it’s true nature. Peace is a practice that requires strength, courage, determination, and consistency. Peace is best practiced with the full intensity of our being and this is what tapas brings to our yoga practice.

Bring tapas to your yoga practice. With tapas you will find the support you need when there is adversity and inspiration to be your best in every moment.

New Year’s, Early

I love yoga. I really do! But sometimes I can’t muster up the strength to get by booty to class. After work and school, you would think I’d be chomping at the bit to put myself in a relaxing environment. But I just get so tired and lazy, its truly frustrating! Even though I know it will feel so good to get a little work out and center myself, it can be all too much for me at times.

I admire all the students at NOURISH who come to class on a weekly basis. Heck, some even come daily! You all are truly inspiring to me and I love coming to class when you are there. I love practicing yoga with the people I am working for and with. It gives us a bond that is more than just a hello! in passing by the front desk or a reminder call for their next appointment. What we all have going on at NOURISH is truly unique and I am proud and lucky to be a part of it!

Think of this as my New Year’s Resolution: From here on out I want to make a commitment to myself and do the things that make me happy on a weekly basis! This means going to Tuesday night yoga with Victor, hanging out with Emily, Brittni & Kate more often, doing nice things for my boy friend and pursuing a new hobby. I also think it would be nice to do my homework and reading on time….

Thanks for the inspiration and NOURISHment : )

The King of Yoga

I read a theory once that suggested the main reason for watching sport, be it soccer, the Olympics or surfing on Steamers Lane, was the desire to see humans go beyond what we think is physically possible. The writer argued that the best moments in sport were the days when you saw an athlete go beyond good and move into greatness.

Well, I know that yoga is not a sport and that the majority of us practice the activity for helping and healing oneself… but I read a story the other day about an Indian man who certainly seems to have made the move from good to greatness.

On June 14th 2009, Mr C Poovendran set the world record for longest yoga marathon when he performed yoga for an incredible 28 hours!

While attempting the world record, Mr Poovendran performed 1019 asanas and also sought to entertain the spectators by drinking water and taking off his t-shirt… while performing a headstand… with his eyes closed!

Now admittedly on first read this story seems a little shallow. The breaking of world records is something that tends to take up the last five minutes of local news broadcasts and this seemed no different. However, when I learned a little more about his life, I began to think about it a lot more.

Mr C Poovendran is currently a yoga teacher who works in Hong Kong. He started his yoga training with his father at just five years old. By the time he was 14 he gained his first yoga award – the yogaraj… or King of Yoga. He has also gained the Best Demonstrator Award at the 5th International Yoga festival, the Yoga Rathna award (jewel of yoga) from the Divine Life society of Chennai, India, and the Creative/Innovation Award in 2006 from Pure Yoga International.

So clearly, Mr Poovendran is not someone looking to have his five minutes of fame by breaking a world record. This is his passion. To take something you love and push it to the very limit must have been very hard. I would imagine that practicing yoga for 28 consecutive hours has a fairly negative affect on your physical and emotional state (so don’t worry, we won’t be extending our class times here at NOURISH). I think I would be afraid that the effort alone would scare me off from every wanting to do a tree pose again. But for Mr Poovendran yoga is clearly more than an activity – it is his life’s work and his commitment to it is something I cannot help but be inspired by.
